Missy Higgins – The Second Act 2024
The Second Act 2024
The Second Act was released on 6th September 2024, marks a significant milestone, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of her debut masterpiece, The Sound of White. This I think means The Missy Higgins is in a new era of her own musical journey. The Sound Of White album is a pure conceived album which is excellent but at times premature.

The Second Act is darker and deeper and has more grounding. The words hold more virtue and knowledge and at times it becomes a story teller’s album.

Understanding The Feel

The Personality
This album goes more personal to her as the song-writer but you can feel and understand what she is saying and singing.

At times this album has some raw edges and some notes that are a little off but it has that beautiful Missy Higgins feel to it. That natural feel like a bit city, a bit folk, a bit ‘something’ feel.

I believe that this album is not a huge level expensive production but more a level-headed basic production to suit the project.

This stops it from being a perfect recording but rather an adequate recording. In saying this, this album, if it was a perfect recording with perfect high ends and low ends that did not get murky and a bit too deep in the midrange to lose some sound, then I believe that this album may have lost out. This needed to be a bit hard and raw for the story telling and emotional identity to really work.

Missy Higgins music is lovely and simple and hits the notes you want but her voice add the feeling of complex hidden emotion that at times you have to guess the feeling of what is being said.

The CD

What Makes It Interesting
In this new CD, Missy Higgins uses a slightly more controlled voice and some new notes that add an extra variation to her music. She has also limited a note in her range that drones on a bit too long and is a bit to nasaly and shallow and then has a funny breathe after it to take the next note.

I do not have a favourite song on this CD like I have on other Missy Higgins CDs as this CD holds more value as a whole album than just one song.

This is one time I got it wrong and bought the CD over vinyl as the vinyl recording will add that distinctive Australian sound and her mixed accent would get that little loose grain in her voice that becomes a tiny bit less in the CD and the clarity of the CD to the feeling of the vinyl. This is a feeling album of sound, story and wonder due to the personal outlook.

This CD shows that you can get a lovely album that not just works on a level of emotion but something that shows that you have become more confident in your music.

Many people will not like this album or even certain songs but it has something that connects and I hope that those who do not connect at first, give it a second listen before they dismiss it.
Personally, I am more than happy that I have it in my collection.
