Black Hawk Down 4k Disc – 2001
4k Disc Release – 2019
It has two cuts of the film
144min & 152 min
I have only watched the theatrical cut (144 Min).
The Audio & Video
The Video
The disc is visually entralling and graphic with new colors not seen on the bluray that adds an extra something to the film.
It is a gritty, dusty film so it is not like a super sharp digital movie but this is what gives this movie the grunt it has. The interesting thing is even with sand, and bomb blasts and everything, the definition of clothing, scratches on metal objects and skin tones and blemishes show through tight and sharp which is nice to see.
There is no crushing in the black or dark sequence which is nice as it does have lots of dark sequences and long sequences.
Stunning 4K resolution enhances visual detail and clarity especially in the night scenes where the green night vision changes a bit and the lighting adds excellent definition in individual areas. I was interested in how the definition and coloration has added a new dimension to this film that has not really been seen before as even at the cinema it lacked certain points of definition in the resolution and coloration. I am not sure if it is because the depth of field is extended to make the film feel more open in areas and tighter in other areas or if the definition added more story that you did not see before.
The Audio
It does have Dolby Atmos but as from a stereo listener’s point of view, this movies is front and loud and in your face but clarity and all the voices are lifelike and organic. The whole sound stage is engineered very well to bring realism in a very large sound stage format.
This is a movie of high-quality cinematography and it is big in all aspects. I personally am not a fan of war movies but this one is interesting and worth a watch.
Conclusion
An Amazing Disc That I May Rewatch
Even though this movie was made in 2001 they did not try and change the feel of the film like they have done in other movies, like T2, with strange coloration or noise reduction. It is just given a new structuring to make the movie have the same impact as when it was at the cinema but with the definition and sound you want to see in it.
The disc itself is amazing and worth a watch and if you’re working out how a movie should sound, this is it. This is UHD and 4K Discs at it’s best. But it is not a movie that you can watch over and over again.
