Conclave (2024)
The Movie
This movie is interesting and with a great cast. It is a heavy film with lots to take in and get your head around as the main story is simple but you can personally make it as complicated as you like for yourself to navigate. I am not exactly sure how true the film is against reality but you can think that maybe they got something right. As I said before it is heavy but due to this a second watch may be worthwhile or maybe even a third.
The Resolution
The 4K Idea
This movie is shot in lots of interesting lighting situations but the image stays strong for each light condition. The film has a lot of different textures from robes to walls and everything is cinematic and well preserved. This is not sharp like a sci-fi film but more real life and classic film making.
As it is a dark film the blacks are black but not crushing or taking away from the backgrounds and adding detail in the foreground.
The Editing is what you expect from a movie like this as it is on point and well tuned with no sloppy or loose edits.
The cinematography is artistic yet to the point of the movie so it looks great but feels sort of real.
The Sound
A Quiet Yet Loud Experience
Firstly the dialogue is organic and interesting but you will not miss a word.
This is a movie made on quiet environments with exaggerated real sounds which is nice and what you want to feel in a movie like this. You hear doors, footsteps and even how clothing sounds. It is very organic and deep into the environment. The soundstage really shows its value in this film.
The score is an emotional adjunct that builds in areas and the violin area is used intricately to add that intense feel for the movie.
As my review is in stereo as that is all I have – I cannot advise on the 7.1 or Atmos track but judging from how good this sounds in stereo it should be pretty amazing in Dolby Atmos. They have taken time and built precisely the whole sound section.
The Cast
Great Cast
If a serious movie has a cast like this sometimes these are big misses but this compels you to watch further and the cast drags you in and then the crews do the heavy lifting to make it come together. It makes it feel like you are watching a special film. One criticism is sometimes you feel like it is slightly overacted and prolonged by milliseconds for no reason but they get away with it.
The Production
The Sets & Stages
Everything is real looking and intricate. It is big and detailed throughout. It plays with your head a bit wondering if the sets are real or fake. The blending between location, set and CGI is quality.
The Lighting
The lights are used to make light and dark and shadow to make each frame feel like a great picture and then it is meshed through the movie. It adds a real feel that would probably ruin the movie if it was not there or if less would change how the film reacts.
The Locations
When watching films like this you get it and it shows up beautifully in 4K on the disc as it is precise, yet real and on top of that cinematic.
The Overall Idea
A Quality Movie
This movie is critically acclaimed and has done well in the awards arena and it deserves it. It is not the lightest film and with the 2 hour run time you may need a stop but this is not because the film is bad. It is just heavy and you need to think. The red of the film also makes the film abit more heavy to view.
I am not personally a big fan of religious films but I had to get it as everyone was saying it was great at the cinema. I am not a fan of this film either but it is a great film with all the care needed for its audience to view. I will probably never watch this film again but I have watched it once.
If you are trying to understand what is a quality new movie this will tell you and it is a great movie to watch and take apart as it has been crafted with care.
Conclave At The Cinema
This movie would be great at a quality cinema even though it is not super digital and in your face action. A good cinema experience would make it more grand in both the visual and sound areas. The sound will have more distance and add more silence and air between sounds that can only be done in larger cinemas with a good sound set up.
You may lose some screen definition at a cinema but with the audio it would be a more sensory experience. As it is a deeper film you may only watch it once so the cinema would be the best way to see it if you still can but the 4K disc is pretty amazing.
